Should I Finance Lead Generation?

You should absolutely not finance lead generation.

If your business isn’t healthy enough to pay for lead generation without taking on debt, your business isn’t healthy enough to support lead generation.

If you’re at a stage in your business where you’re considering taking on financing from a predatory lender no lead generation activity is going to fix your business.  

Before you buy lead generation, you should be able to answer all of the below questions with a “yes”.

When Should I Outsource Lead Generation?

  • Are you already paying yourself more in take home salary every month than you would pay your third party marketing firm?
  • Do you have six months of operating capital in the bank?
  • Can you afford to have the campaign fail completely with zero return on your investment?
  • Do you have at least 1MM in ARR with at least 200,000 in EBITDA?
  • Are you charging a minimum of 100/user/month for managed services?

If you can’t answer “yes” to all of these questions, it’s not time to outsource lead generation.

Remember: your marketing company gets paid even if they fail.

Before I sign a new client, I outline all of the risks involved in buying lead generation, including this nasty little truth:  sometimes it doesn’t work at all.  I won’t take on clients that can’t do basic math on the financial impact of failed business development.  When you’re scared about the future of your business, any mediocre sales rep can turn your fear into commission.
